Omegafriends Background: Big Band in Venture City is... more Iron Man than iron lung. Instead of a beat cop in New Meridian, Corporal Birdland was on the mean streets as a part of the VCPD, frequenting the seedier districts and volunteering on gang busts and sting operations. His dedication to duty got him in trouble more often than not, and eventually found himself relegated to paperwork in the VCPD after a shootout gone wrong. Though not permanently disabled, his injuries sustained messed up his physical state. After voicing pleas to Chief Quimbley day after day to get back on the beat, his chance finally came with a sign-up for an experimental suit, one that promised to enhance his strength and abilities to an unprecedented level. The training and testing required to use it, though, effectively forced him off of his long-time position... and straight into the Omegafriends.
Whatever the suit was made of and powered by, it certainly wasn't designed to be musically themed. But something in its programming latched on to Ben's love of the jazz scene and the clubs he'd listen in on on his beat, and reconfigured itself to the walking, talking, one-man band that serves the Omegafriends and the forces of justice in Venture City.
Personality: Ben Birdland, before getting gunned down by [insert generic gang name here], was always an upstanding citizen and a model officer on the VCPD. A war veteran-turned-arm of the law, Ben upheld the virtues of Venture City to the best of his extent and then some, cleaning up the mean streets (while staying away from the 22-7s) as much as he could.
But all of this honor and justice is supported by an undercurrent of free flowing, laidback jazz. From the moment he was around the earliest radios, he was enamored with the sweet sounds of saxophones and upright basses, and dabbled in practicing every major bandstand instrument in his spare time. On some beats, he even took a clarinet or a saxophone with him, walking around and improvising on slow nights. All of this comes through in his voice and his mannerisms, keeping calm and cool under pressure. It'd take a lot to flap this grandstander.
Incongruous with the 2-ton visage of the Big Band suit, Ben is a very friendly and laidback type of guy. He did his best to keep the morale of the VCPD up even when the going got tough, putting on impromptu performances for the precinct. Though he's not exactly welcomed back to his old beat (something about "becoming one of those costumed menaces", a sore subject to say the least), he's since turned his attention to using the flexibility of his suit to host jam sessions with any other music-themed heroes in the Omegabase. Or by himself. He's got enough hiding under that massive trenchcoat to host an entire bandstand himself.
Even with all of his experience and smooth dealings, Ben still has a few sore spots hiding beneath the metal. His little incident that put him out of work has left him with a pretty deep resentment for gangs and hooligans, with a tendency to punish them a little harder than he probably should. He also tends to keep an eye out for internal corruption and harmful laziness, his old tendencies from whipping the VCPD into shape carrying over to the Omegafriends. Although, really, who's going to argue with a 7'8" walking mass of metal and soul?
Powers: Big Band is a super apt name for ol' Ben here. He's Big. And he's a one man Band. BB is a walking marvel of technology, strapped in a mechanical suit powered by the local flavor of Unobtanium. In it, he gains access to a variety of destructive, musical themed instruments-cum-weapons. Giant brass fists, sonic saxophone blasts, massive cymbals to hold the bad guys in... you name it, he's got it. He's also got a nice set of rocket thrusters hidden underneath the massive trench, just in case he needs to get airborne.
The suit that gives him his powers is more or less his costume, though he's much less physically capable without it. It's a tradeoff between power and being inconspicuous. His usual method of putting it on involves a pretty complicated process involving the phonebooth tunnel network that's usually edited out for episode length. (But trust me, it was super snazzy the first time it was shown.)
Sample: Bashing (robotic) heads and playing tunes on the test drive. If that's not enough, lemme know and I'll whip up another sample right quick!
Notes: This is Tuna with Bacon! Ready? FIGHT!
